Reflection on Al-Hadid 57:16 — Qur'an Meezan

أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَن تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ

Has the time not come for those who believe that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah?

Surah Al-Hadid 57:16

Question

Allah asks this question to believers, not to hypocrites — meaning hardness of heart is a risk even for the sincere, and the cure is not more information but more dhikr: what form of dhikr will you do for the next fifteen minutes to answer this verse with action?

Reflection

The Arabic taqallub in “their hearts should become humbly submissive” carries a beautiful physicality — it means to turn over, to be overturned, like soil being prepared for planting. The verse isn’t asking for a static feeling, but for an active, internal upheaval where the heart’s orientation is completely flipped toward Allah.

So, for the next fifteen minutes, I will engage in dhikr al-qalb — silent remembrance with the heart, synchronized with the breath. On the inhale: Yā Ḥayy (O Ever-Living). On the exhale: Yā Qayyūm (O Self-Sustaining). This pairs two of Allah’s names that speak to the very source of life and constancy, directly addressing the heart’s potential stagnation.

What single Name of Allah feels most resonant to you right now, as an answer to this divine call to softness?
