إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ

Translation:
‘We are burdened with debt;

لَحْظَةُ الْإِنْكَارِ: When Denial Becomes a Debt

Y, this single verse—innā la-mugḥramūn (إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ)—is a masterclass in divine irony. Let me show you why it cuts so deep.

The Root: غ ر م (gh-r-m)

The trilateral root غ ر م carries meanings of:

• Financial debt (غَرَامَة/gharāmah) — penalty, fine
• Infatuation (مُغْرَم/mughram) — obsessively attached
• Compulsory loss — forced to pay what you didn’t owe

So when these people say la-mugḥramūn, they’re claiming: “We’ve been charged for something. We’re in debt. We’ve been penalized unfairly.”

The Context: The Farmers’ Delusion (56:64-66)

Let me give you the full picture. Allah is walking humanity through the agricultural process as a reminder:

56:63-64 — “Have you seen what you sow? Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the Grower?”

Then comes the devastating hypothetical:

56:65 — لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًا
“If We willed, We could make it [the crop] debris (ḥuṭām/حُطَام).”

And then, the farmers’ response:

56:66 — فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ
“And you would remain in wonder, saying:”

56:66 — إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ
“Indeed, we are burdened with debt!”

The Irony: Denying the Grower, Then Complaining About the Loss

Notice the absurdity Allah is exposing:

1. When the crop grows → They attribute it to their own effort, their planning, their irrigation. “We worked hard. We earned this.”
